Om museet
MACBA opened on 28 November 1995 and gave Barcelona its first public museum of contemporary art, thanks to the impetus of the artistic and cultural community and civil society. The main building, on Plaça dels Àngels, is the work of the American architect Richard Meier, designed in 1990 and built between 1991 and 1995. In 2004 an auditorium was added in the basement.
The museum is complemented by the former Convent dels Àngels, opposite the main building. It houses the Study and Documentation Centre, with the library and archive, and the chapel, an experimental exhibition space that opened in 2006. The MACBA Foundation, created in 1987, forms part of the museum’s consortium together with the Generalitat de Catalunya, Barcelona City Council and the Ministry of Culture.
The MACBA Collection, officially constituted in 1997, brings together art from the late 1950s to the present, with particular attention to Catalan and Spanish art after 1945 and to artists from South America, the Arab world and Eastern Europe. Following the integration of the holdings of the “la Caixa” Foundation in 2011, the collection exceeds 5,500 works. Between January 2025 and February 2027 extension works are being carried out in Plaça dels Àngels, during which the museum remains open.
