Om museet
The Museu de la Música de Barcelona grew out of the interest in old instruments awakened by the Barcelona exhibitions of the late 19th century. In 1932 an important collection of instruments passed to the Junta de Museos de Barcelona, and after an interruption caused by the Civil War the museum opened its doors on 29 May 1946 in the Conservatorio Superior on Calle del Bruc, with around a hundred instruments and under the direction of Josep Ricart i Matas.
The collection grew rapidly: in 1970 the Arellano collection of phonographs and gramophones was added, and in 1980 the museum moved to Casa Quadras, a Modernist building by Josep Puig i Cadafalch, reopened in 1983. In 2001 that site was closed to prepare a new location.
Since 2007 the museum has occupied its own space in L'Auditori, in the Fort Pienc district, with an educational and multimedia display. The permanent exhibition covers the diversity of instruments, a historical itinerary from the Middle Ages to popular music and current technology, and the musical cultures of other continents. Of the holdings of more than 2,200 instruments, around 500 are shown.
The museum also has a specialised library, a historical archive and a documentation and research space, and it works on cataloguing, restoration and instrument loan projects.
