Om museet
The Museo de Vilafranca was founded in August 1935 with a board chaired by the mayor Josep Masachs Llorach, following the precedents of El Niu d'Art (1915-1927), the first Exposición de Arte del Penedès (1926) and the first archaeological excavations in the region. From the exhibition “La arqueología del vino”, presented at the first Feria de la Vid y el Vino (1943), the first wine museum in Spain emerged in 1947. Its historic home is the Palau Reial of Vilafranca, whose medieval forms were recovered in the 1940s and 1950s.
Between 1962 and 1978 four major bequests arrived: the ornithology of Pere Mestre Raventós, 19th-century Catalan art and furniture from the Pladellorens family, Catalan art of the first half of the 20th century and the liturgical art of mosén Manuel Trens, and the ceramics of mosén Antoni Bonet i Baltà. In 1980 the chapel of Sant Pelegrí was added as a temporary exhibition room. From 2004 a major transformation was undertaken, with a new museological project, a new image and the name Vinseum (2007); the renovated Palau Reial opened in October 2012.
The second phase, with the demolition of the old building and the construction of a new exhibition space, ended with the opening of the renovated museum in November 2024. The main exhibition occupies the three upper floors and is organised in four areas: the origin, the winery, the journeys of wine and the spirit of wine; the visit ends with a glass of Catalan wine in the tasting room. On the ground floor, the Plaza del Vino has free access. In July 2025 the Government of the Generalitat declared Vinseum a museum of national interest.
