Om museet
The Museu de Mallorca occupies Can Aiamans, a 16th-century building formed by joining several old houses in the centre of Palma, popularly known as “Ca la Gran Cristiana” after Catalina Zaforteza, a prominent supporter of Mallorcan Carlism who lived there in the 19th century. It has three storeys, a portal with a semicircular arch, a noble floor with Baroque balconies and an attic with Gothic windows. In the central courtyard, the remains of what is considered the first identified Muslim house on the island came to light.
Palma City Council bought the building in 1968 and handed it over to the State to become a museum, which opened in 1976. Today it is managed by the Govern de les Illes Balears. After more than six years of works, the museum reopened in 2015 with new rooms devoted to fine arts and decorative arts, from the 13th to the 20th century; the other collections are gradually being incorporated into the route.
The painting collection includes works by Gothic masters such as Francesc Comes and Joan Rosat, by the Hispano-Flemish painters Pere Terrencs and Baltasar Buira, and by the Renaissance artists Fernando de Coca and Mateu López, all active in Mallorca. In 2010 the museum's management resumed an underground excavation begun in the centre of Palma in the late 1960s, which has uncovered a Muslim ceramics workshop from the Almoravid period. The museum also has other venues on the island, such as the Museu Monogràfic de Pollentia in Alcúdia and the Sección Etnológica de Muro.
