Om museet
The Museu Salvador Vilaseca owes its name and origins to the Reus physician and prehistorian Salvador Vilaseca Anguera (1896–1975), who devoted his life to archaeology, promoted the first municipal museum in Reus (1933) and left a prehistoric collection of international renown. That collection was later integrated into the archaeology museum that bears his name.
In 1978 the Banco de España agreed to close its Reus branch and transfer the building to the city for public use. In 1982 the municipal plenary, in agreement with the Generalitat, approved the creation of two public foundations, the Museu d'Arqueologia Doctor Salvador Vilaseca and the Museu Comarcal de Reus, and in 1984 the archaeology museum opened in the former Banco de España building, at Raval de Santa Anna 59. In 1991 both museums were merged, and the Institut Municipal de Museu de Reus and other services such as the Centre de la Imatge Mas Iglesias were later created. In 2012 the facilities were modernised and two air-conditioned rooms for temporary exhibitions were created in the building.
Today the building, which is also the headquarters of the Institut Municipal Reus Cultura, houses the permanent exhibition “Prehistòria i món antic” on the first floor, a chronological tour from the earliest hominids to Romanisation; the ground floor is used for temporary exhibitions.
