Om museet
The museum explains the history of footwear and related industries in Mallorca from the 13th century to the present. Inca and the Raiguer region were the island's main centre of the footwear industry, with quality production based on the Goodyear welt system.
It is installed in the general services block of a former infantry barracks, known as the cuartel del General Luque, built between 1909 and 1910 to designs by the architect Francesc Roca. The building was converted into a museum and opened on 2 June 2010 under the name Museu del Calçat i de la Pell (Footwear and Leather Museum).
At the end of 2018 it reopened under its current name and with a broader exhibition approach, after a participatory process in which local residents and former workers decided how to present their heritage. Almost all the machines, tools, shoes, drawings, documents and photographs come from donations and loans from companies and individuals in the region.
The permanent collection occupies the first floor and includes traditional tools, industrial machinery, objects from the auxiliary industries, a photographic tribute to the workers, collection footwear, fashion, sector advertising and a “Wunderkammer”.
