The Museu Egipci de Barcelona grew out of the collection of Egyptian antiquities of the hotelier Jordi Clos. In 1992 the Fundació Arqueològica Clos was created and some seventy pieces were shown in a Barcelona hotel; the success of the display led to the opening of the museum on 23 March 1994, first on the Rambla de Catalunya.

In 2000 the museum moved to its current site, a building of more than 2,000 m² on Calle de València, in the Eixample, which occupies three floors: two for the permanent collection and one for temporary exhibitions. The foundation runs the museum, research and outreach programmes, adult courses, family activities and cultural expeditions to Egypt.

The permanent exhibition brings together more than 1,300 original pieces organised by theme: the pharaoh, hieroglyphic writing, art and daily life, mummification and funerary equipment, the tomb and the cult of the dead, and temples, gods and goddesses. The objects include jewellery, stone vessels, stelae, reliefs, sarcophagi, mummies and mummified animals.

The foundation also maintains the Campus Arqueològic in Palau-solità i Plegamans and a friends' club for the museum, with its own activities.

Permanente udstillinger

• El faraón – Section on the pharaoh and the royal family, with real representations, princely shabtis and objects bearing royal names.
• Momificación y equipamiento funerario – Explains belief in the afterlife through the myth of Isis and Osiris, with mummies, sarcophagi and funerary equipment.
• Templos, dioses y diosas – Presents the temple as the house of the gods, with stelae, reliefs, offering statues, mummified animals and ritual objects.

Building accessible for wheelchair users, with a lift to all floors and accessible toilets in the lobby. Guide dogs and assistance dogs are admitted. The museum has a visit script and numerous tactile elements for blind visitors.
