Om museet

Aberdeen Maritime Museum stands on the historic Shiprow close to the harbour and tells the story of the city's long relationship with the sea. Its oldest part is Provost Ross's House, built in 1593 by the master mason Andrew Jamieson and extended in 1710. The ship owner John Ross of Arnage made it his home in 1702. In the nineteenth century it was divided into tenements and by 1950 it was derelict. The National Trust for Scotland bought it in 1984 and leased it to Aberdeen City Council, and the museum opened there on 26 April 1984.

A few years later the council acquired the neighbouring Trinity Congregational Church and converted it into an extension, which opened in 1997. A modern link building joins the church and the old house, and the displays run thematically over four floors.

The collections cover about 3,000 ships built in Aberdeen between 1790 and 1989, ship models from 1689 to the present, the harbour's history, the fishing industry and the offshore energy industry. The centrepiece of the energy displays is a 9-metre-high model of the Murchison oil platform. Outside the museum stands the Aberdeen Fishing Memorial by David Williams-Ellis, unveiled in 2018. The museum is run by Aberdeen City Council as part of Aberdeen Archives, Gallery and Museums.
