Om museet
The Signal Tower was built in 1813 as the shore station for the Bell Rock Lighthouse, which stands on a reef about eleven miles out in the North Sea. The tower took its name from the signals used to communicate between the lighthouse keepers and the staff on land, and the complex beside the harbour also held a sea wall, storehouses and homes for the keepers' families.
The station served the lighthouse for well over a century. After the keepers' families moved to new housing elsewhere in the 1950s, the buildings were let as council housing for around two decades, and the Signal Tower opened as a museum in 1974.
Today the museum is run by the local trust ANGUSalive and tells the story of the Bell Rock Lighthouse together with Arbroath's fishing, maritime, social, industrial and church history. New galleries opened in September 2019, including a display on the town's fishing heritage with audio-visual games and quizzes, and a smaller cottage gallery is used for changing exhibitions. In season, staff lead visitors up the spiral stairs and ladders to the tower room at the top of the building.
