Om museet
A house stood on the Cannon Hall site as early as the 13th century, and the name is thought to come from its first recorded occupant, Gilbert Canun. John Spencer bought the estate in 1673, and for almost 300 years the Spencer and later Spencer Stanhope families enlarged the house and its grounds, using wealth from the local iron trade. In the 18th century wings were added for a library and a drawing room, rooms were built on the upper floors in the 1790s for a very large family, and a Jacobean-style ballroom was the last major addition in the late 19th century.
Several family members were artists, among them John Roddam Spencer Stanhope, Gertrude Spencer Stanhope and the painter Evelyn De Morgan. The family archive survives in Barnsley Archives and Local Studies.
The last of the line, Elizabeth Spencer Stanhope, sold the hall to Barnsley Corporation in 1951. It became a museum in 1957, when the house was almost empty, so the first curator had to build a collection from scratch. Today the museum shows paintings, drawings, ceramics, glass, metalwork and furniture in historic room settings and in galleries, and it hosts the De Morgan Galleries with works by Evelyn De Morgan and her husband William De Morgan. The house stands in about 70 acres of parkland and walled gardens and is run by Barnsley Museums.
