Om museet
Deal Castle was built in 1539–40 on the orders of Henry VIII, who feared an invasion by the Catholic powers of Europe after his break with Rome. It formed the centre of a chain of three artillery forts along the Kent coast, with Walmer Castle to the south and Sandown Castle to the north. Its low, rounded bastions were designed to deflect enemy shot while carrying many guns of their own.
In December 1539 Anne of Cleves, on her way to meet Henry as his future wife, landed at Deal and rested at the unfinished castle. In 1639 the Battle of the Downs between Spanish and Dutch fleets was fought within sight of the fort, and in 1648 the castle was besieged during the Civil War. Its captains were first local men and later naval officers, politicians and diplomats; the post still exists today as a ceremonial title.
The castle was brought back into service in the Second World War to guard the Channel coast. It is now cared for by English Heritage and shows displays on Tudor defence, finds of Tudor weapons from Camber Castle, an exhibition about the people who lived and worked here and a graffiti room where visitors can leave their own mark.
