Om museet

A house has stood at Elton since the twelfth century, and the Proby family has lived at Elton Hall since 1660, having held land in the village from the time of Elizabeth I. Sir Thomas Proby and his wife Frances Cotton built a Restoration house between 1665 and 1668 that incorporated the medieval chapel and gatehouse of the earlier manor house. In the eighteenth century the Earl of Carysfort gave the building its Gothic character, which can still be seen on the south front, and further alterations were made between 1855 and 1860 by the architect Henry Ashton.

The collection is a blend of two houses, because the contents of Glenart Castle, the Irish seat of the Carysfort family, were brought to Elton in the early 1920s. It includes French furniture, an important private library with a notable group of English bibles and prayer books, and paintings from the early Renaissance to the nineteenth century, among them works by Gainsborough, Constable, Reynolds, Landseer and Millais. Portraits of Oliver Cromwell, Charles I and Charles II recall the political upheavals of the seventeenth century.

The present gardens follow a design of 1911 and were largely restored and replanted by Meredyth Proby over about forty years, with hedging, topiary, a flower garden, a lily pond and an orangery created to mark the millennium. They won the Historic Houses Garden of the Year Judges' Choice Award in 2021. The family still lives at the Hall and opens it to visitors on selected days in the summer season.
