Om museet

Farnborough Hall near Banbury is a Grade I listed country house built from the local honey-coloured Hornton stone. The Holbech family bought the estate in 1684 and have lived here ever since. In the 1740s William Holbech returned from the Grand Tour with paintings and antiquities and had the house remodelled in a Palladian style to show them off. The rooms are decorated with outstanding plasterwork of nature and wildlife by the stuccatore William Perritt.

The landscape was laid out in the same period with the help of the amateur designer Sanderson Miller. It is a rare surviving example of a ferme ornee, an ornamental farm in which working land is combined with walks, pools and garden buildings. A raised terrace walk runs above the park and leads to features such as an Ionic temple, an oval pavilion and a tall obelisk. Some of the Grand Tour paintings were sold in the 20th century, but family pictures and souvenirs of the tour remain in the house.

During both world wars the house served as an auxiliary hospital. In 1960 the estate was given to the National Trust, but the Holbech family still lives here and arranges the limited visitor openings. Since 2015 the Trust has been restoring the park to the layout shown on an estate plan of 1772, and a five and a half mile circular walk explores it.
