Om museet

Hughenden Manor stands in the Chiltern Hills just north of High Wycombe. The estate is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Huchdene and passed through several owners, including the Dormer and Savage families, before John Norris inherited it in 1816 and laid out the parkland. In 1848 the politician Benjamin Disraeli bought it, helped by money from the Bentinck family, and made it his country home and political base.

In the 1860s Disraeli and his wife Mary Anne commissioned the architect Edward Buckton Lamb to turn the white stuccoed Georgian house into the red brick Gothic building seen today. Disraeli, who became Queen Victoria's favourite Prime Minister, kept the house until his death in 1881. The rooms are presented as he would have known them, including his library and a dining room set for the Queen's visit in 1877.

The house has a second story. In 1941 the Air Ministry took it over and it became the base for a secret map-making operation code-named Hillside; the west wing rooms tell this story. The formal gardens, walled garden, orchard and the surrounding parkland and woodland are part of the visit, and the property is now cared for by the National Trust.
