Om museet
The Jewel Tower was built in 1365–66 to hold the personal treasure of King Edward III. It stood in a quiet corner of the medieval Palace of Westminster, protected by a moat linked to the Thames, and its ground floor has finely carved vaulting. The monarch's valuables were kept there until a fire in 1512 led Henry VIII to move his court to Whitehall.
At the end of the 16th century the House of Lords began to store its parliamentary records in the tower, and a house for the clerk was built beside it. The tower served as the Lords' records office through the 18th century, with several rebuilds to make it safer from fire. It was one of very few buildings of the old palace to survive the fire of 1834, after which the records moved to the new Victoria Tower.
In 1869 the newly formed Standard Weights and Measures Department took over the building to store and test the official standards of weights and measures for the United Kingdom and the empire, and used it until 1938. After the Second World War the Ministry of Works repaired and restored the tower and opened it to visitors in 1948. It is now cared for by English Heritage and shows two exhibitions on its upper floors.
