Om museet
The Curzon family lived at Kedleston for centuries before Nathaniel Curzon decided in the late 1750s to replace the old house with a new one that would impress. The medieval village was moved to make room for the park. The design began under the architects Matthew Brettingham and James Paine, and Robert Adam then took charge, creating the grand classical interiors and completing the north front. The house was largely finished by about 1765.
Kedleston was planned for lavish entertaining and as a setting for a major collection of paintings, sculpture and furnishings inspired by ancient Rome. The Marble Hall and the circular Saloon are among its most celebrated rooms. In 1916 the house passed to George Nathaniel Curzon, Viceroy of India from 1899 to 1905. He brought home many objects from his travels in South Asia and the Middle East, and these are displayed in a museum in the house, arranged from the viewpoint of the colonial ruler, together with ceremonial gifts that show the power relations of the British Empire.
The house, park and gardens later passed to the National Trust, while the family kept the Family Wing. The surrounding landscape has serpentine lakes, follies, pleasure grounds and a church that is open to visitors.
