Om museet

The gallery was founded by the soap manufacturer William Hesketh Lever, later Lord Leverhulme, who wanted to share his collections with the workers of his model village, Port Sunlight, and with the public. At first he showed small displays in the village library and in Hulme Hall, but he then needed a larger building. He began planning it in 1913 with the architects William and Segar Owen of Warrington, who designed a low classical building with mostly rooflit galleries so that it would not overwhelm the surrounding cottages.

King George V laid the foundation stone on 25 March 1914 by remote control, pressing a button on a model of the village in Hulme Hall. The building was formally opened on 16 December 1922 by Princess Beatrice. Lever chose works from his own collection for it and bought others specifically for display.

Today the gallery is part of National Museums Liverpool. Its collections include Victorian and Pre-Raphaelite paintings, English furniture, Wedgwood pottery, Chinese ceramics, sculpture and tapestries. Some rooms close from time to time for maintenance.
