Om museet

Lotherton Hall stands on an estate near Aberford, east of Leeds. The house has a Regency core and was extended in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods by Colonel Gascoigne, giving it the feel of a grand but comfortable country home of the early 1900s. A small medieval chapel dedicated to St James, dating from the 1100s, was once part of the lost village of Luttrington; it was restored during the First World War, when the estate served as a military hospital.

The house became a museum in 1968, with many objects given by the Gascoigne family. Leeds Museums and Galleries now runs the site, which shows rooms furnished in the style of the period, restored servants' quarters that explain the lives of the staff, and a large collection of decorative arts from the 19th and 20th centuries, including furniture, ceramics, silver, metalwork and jewellery. Fashion has been shown at Lotherton since the earliest days of the museum, and dedicated Fashion Galleries host changing exhibitions of dress and textiles.

The grounds include eight acres of Edwardian gardens created by Gwendolen Gascoigne between 1893 and 1914, an orchard planted in 2005, a red deer park and woodland. Wildlife World, a small zoo with a nocturnal house, and several play areas make the estate a full day out for families.
