Peel Castle

Peel Castle occupies St Patrick’s Isle, a small islet joined to the town of Peel by a causeway. The island was a religious site long before it became a fortress, and the round tower and the church of St Patrick, each roughly a thousand years old, survive from that early period. In the 11th century Magnus Barefoot, the Norse king of Mann, is credited with building a wooden fort here. Excavations in the 1980s uncovered traces of it, together with a 10th-century grave and silver coins from about 1030.

Most of the stone curtain wall and its towers were built in local red sandstone, mainly in the 14th century. The island was also the seat of the bishops of Sodor and Man, and the crypt of the 13th-century Cathedral of St German is still standing. The site was gradually abandoned from the 18th century, and the cathedral parish moved to a newer church in 1980.

Today the castle is looked after by Manx National Heritage. Visitors climb to the ticket office and then explore the open-air ruins at their own pace, with an audio guide that tells the story of the site. A large conservation project is under way, with work on the Barbican wall planned from November 2026 to spring 2027.

A voluntary £1.50 donation is added to tickets and can be declined at the ticket desk. This is an entirely open-air archaeological site. The only way in is up 24 uneven historic steps with a partial handrail, and inside there are uneven grass paths, slopes, steep inclines and stepped ruins, so wheelchair users cannot visit. The toilets are reached by steps and there is no accessible toilet on site; the nearest accessible public toilet is at Peel Breakwater. A hearing loop is fitted at the ticket kiosk, and a printed transcript of the audio guide can be borrowed. Assistance dogs are welcome and there is a water bowl at the kiosk. Benches are placed around the site. Descriptive and familiarisation tours can be arranged in advance. An access guide is available online.

Young children are welcome and can explore the crypt and the walls, but the steps, steep paths and uneven ground mean children need constant supervision. There are no baby changing facilities on site; the nearest are at Peel Breakwater toilets, about 50 metres from the entrance. Prams can be left at the ticket office. Picnics are encouraged and there are benches around the site.

Transport & parkering

The castle can be reached on foot over the harbour swing bridge near Peel Beach (about 5 minutes from the town centre) or around the harbour (10 to 15 minutes). Coaches can drop visitors at the entrance and park in the nearby House of Manannan car park.

A small gift kiosk at the ticket barrier sells guidebooks, soft drinks and snacks; there is no café on site and picnics are encouraged. There is no cloakroom, but bulky bags and prams can be left at the ticket office if space allows. The nearest kiosk for refreshments is at Peel Breakwater, about 50 metres from the entrance. Wi-Fi is not mentioned.
