Om museet

The Petrie Museum began in 1892 as a teaching collection for the new Department of Egyptian Archaeology and Philology at University College London. Both the department and the museum were created through the bequest of the writer Amelia Edwards, who also gave several hundred Egyptian antiquities and her personal library.

The collection grew to international importance mainly through the excavations of William Flinders Petrie, the first Edwards Professor. He worked at dozens of major sites, among them the Roman-period cemeteries at Hawara, the city of Amarna and the first true pyramid at Meydum, where he found some of the earliest evidence for mummification. In 1913 Petrie sold his own large collection of antiquities to UCL, which made it one of the largest collections of Egyptian antiquities outside Egypt. At that time the galleries served students and academics and were not open to the general public.

Petrie retired in 1933, and his successors added further material from excavations in Egypt and Sudan. During the Second World War the collection was packed up and moved out of London for safety. In the early 1950s it returned and was housed in a former stable building, which it still occupies. Today the museum is open to everyone, free of charge, and also serves researchers and UCL students.
