Om museet
SS Nomadic was built in Belfast in 1911 by the same yard as the liner RMS Titanic and was designed by Thomas Andrews. She was a tender, a small passenger vessel used to carry travellers between the quay and large ships anchored in deeper water. At Cherbourg in April 1912 she took first- and second-class passengers out to the Titanic, a few days before the liner's loss.
Nomadic served in both world wars and spent more than fifty years ferrying passengers to transatlantic liners. Later she was moored beside the Eiffel Tower in Paris for nearly thirty years and used as a restaurant and party venue. She is the last surviving White Star Line vessel and is part of the core collection of the National Historic Ships register.
After about a century she returned to Belfast, where she was restored and berthed in Hamilton Dock, close to the slipways where she was built. Visitors can explore four decks, including first- and second-class spaces, the crew quarters, the bridge and the flying bridge. Displays cover her construction, her service at Cherbourg and the people connected with her since 1911, and the dockside panels tell the story of Belfast shipbuilding.
