Om museet

Sutton House was built in 1534-35 for Ralph Sadler, a courtier who worked for Thomas Cromwell and rose to be Secretary of State to Henry VIII. It is a brick house, an unusual and expensive material in Tudor Hackney, and it is now the oldest house in the borough. Later owners included a London textile merchant and merchants linked to the East India Company, and from the 1650s the building housed schools for girls and boys. The name Sutton House dates only from the 1950s, when the National Trust chose it in honour of Thomas Sutton, the founder of Charterhouse.

In 1891 the two halves of the building were reunited as a church institute for young men. The National Trust bought the house in 1938 with a bequest made in memory of two brothers killed in the First World War, and from 1953 trade-union staff associations used it as offices. After the union left in 1981 the house stood empty, and in 1985 squatters occupied it for a time and turned it into a music and community venue; some of their wall paintings were kept.

A local campaign to save the house led to a restoration that began in 1990, and Sutton House opened to the public in 1994. Visitors see oak-panelled rooms with carved linenfold panelling, a Tudor kitchen, a painted staircase and a courtyard with the only surviving original window, the Armada window. Next door the National Trust bought a former breaker's yard in 2005 and turned it into the Breaker's Yard, a pocket garden that opened in 2014 and features a two-storey caravan sculpture.
