Om museet
The Talyllyn Railway was built in the 1860s to carry slate from the Bryneglwys quarry near Abergynolwyn down to the coast at Tywyn. The company was incorporated by an Act of Parliament in 1865. A group of Manchester cotton mill owners, worried about the shortage of cotton caused by the American Civil War, had decided to invest in slate, and passenger traffic on the line was authorised in November 1866.
The venture was heavily over-capitalised and never prospered. Both quarry and railway were offered for auction in 1879, and in 1911 the local member of parliament Henry Haydn Jones bought both. From the 1950s the line was preserved by enthusiasts and volunteers, and it is known as the world's first preserved railway.
Today steam trains run between Tywyn Wharf and Nant Gwernol, stopping at stations such as Dolgoch and Abergynolwyn, where the Quarryman's Caban café and a children's adventure playground are located. At Tywyn Wharf the Narrow Gauge Railway Museum displays locomotives and smaller items from nearly eighty narrow-gauge railways. The railway and the Bryneglwys quarry landscape form part of the Slate Landscape of North Wales World Heritage Site, which was inscribed in 2021.

Most passenger trains have one wheelchair-accessible carriage that holds up to six wheelchairs, but Vintage and Victorian services do not. Lightweight portable ramps are available at Tywyn Wharf, Rhydyronen, Dolgoch, Abergynolwyn and Nant Gwernol, with a heavy-duty ramp at Brynglas, and most standard carriages have two 200 mm steps from the platform. Accessible toilets are at Tywyn Wharf and Abergynolwyn, and a wheelchair is available at Tywyn Wharf. Disabled parking at Wharf Station is by prior arrangement only (01654 710472). The Narrow Gauge Railway Museum is reached by a ramp with a lift to the upper floor, which has an accessible toilet; the museum lift is a speaking lift with Braille buttons, though some larger mobility scooters may not fit. An induction loop serves the John Slater Education Room, and large print information is available on request. Some stations are remote and have steep or rough paths. Nant Gwernol has no road access.
