Om museet

The Tower of London was begun by William the Conqueror after the Norman conquest of 1066, and the central White Tower was built in stone from about 1078. Over the following centuries kings added concentric walls, towers and a moat, turning it into one of the strongest fortresses in England.

The Tower was never only a castle. It served as a royal residence, a mint, an armoury, a menagerie and a state prison, and its name is linked with famous prisoners and executions, including Anne Boleyn and Lady Jane Grey. The Crown Jewels have been kept here since the seventeenth century.

Today the Tower is a UNESCO World Heritage Site run by the independent charity Historic Royal Palaces. Visitors can see the Crown Jewels, the White Tower with its collection of royal armour, the refurbished Medieval Palace and the battlements, and can join a free tour led by one of the Yeoman Warders who live on the site. The Tower is also known for its resident ravens.
