Om museet
Treasurer's House stands on Minster Yard, next to York Minster. Its foundations lie on the remains of the Roman city, and in the Middle Ages the site was the residence of the Treasurers of York Minster. Over the centuries a number of notable people lived in the building, and it was later divided into separate parts.
In 1897 the house was bought by Frank Green, the grandson of a wealthy industrialist. He brought the divided building back together and, by 1900, had turned it into an elaborately decorated show home, ready for a visit by King Edward VII. He filled the rooms with antiques and works of art chosen to his own exacting standards, and he was known for his eccentricities and for the parties he held there.
Green gave the house and its collection to the National Trust, and it was the first property the Trust received complete with its contents. Visitors today see 13 historic rooms, which are shown on guided tours from April to October. In the festive season the rooms are dressed for Christmas with a different theme each year. The house is also known for ghost stories, including tales of Roman soldiers seen walking through the cellar walls.
Next to the house is a small city garden with statues and a plane tree avenue, which has won Yorkshire in Bloom awards, and a café is located in the former below-stairs area.

| Godt at vide | From April to October the house can be seen only on a guided tour. Booking in advance is recommended because spaces on each tour are limited, but places may be available on the day. On Sundays the tour covers earlier residents of the house; on other open days it focuses on Frank Green and his collection. In November and December visitors explore the house on their own. |
