Om museet
Yarmouth Castle was begun in 1546–47, in the last years of Henry VIII's reign, and was the final fort of the coastal defence programme he had started in 1539. Together with Hurst Castle on the mainland it guarded the western entrance to the Solent and helped to prevent the Isle of Wight from being seized as a base for a larger attack on southern England.
The immediate cause was the fighting of 1545, when a large French fleet entered the eastern Solent and French soldiers landed on the island; this was also the occasion when the Mary Rose sank. Unlike Henry's earlier circular forts, Yarmouth is a square blockhouse and has the first arrowhead-shaped bastion built in England. It stands next to the town quay, where it could command the landing place and the harbour. By 1552 it was garrisoned by a captain, a porter and 17 soldiers, with 12 heavy guns.
The castle remained an effective coastal fortification until the end of the Napoleonic Wars, had an intermittent military role in Victorian times and was used again in both world wars. It was garrisoned until 1885. English Heritage now looks after it and shows recreated 16th-century rooms and an exhibition on the many shipwrecks of Yarmouth Roads.

The courtyard and shop on the ground floor are accessible for wheelchair users via a cobbled path. The castle kitchen, the master gunner's quarters and the original castle entrance are reached by several steps, and the upper areas including the viewing platform and the first-floor exhibition are reached by steep historic steps, so wheelchair access is limited to the ground floor. There is no lift and no accessible toilet. Disabled parking is in the public car park about 600 metres (around five minutes' walk) from the site, and visitors should call the site in advance to arrange a set-down. Light levels are low in the original kitchen and dining room. The film about a Yarmouth shipwreck has subtitles. Handrails are provided and there is seating on the green and in the long room.

Upstairs above the Tudor dining room is a children's room with books and Tudor games and toys, and there is a dressing-up box. A legends trail from the World Builder Challenge series can be followed. Because the stairs are narrow, pushchairs can only be used on the ground floor. The grounds have some room to run around but the ground is uneven.
