Om museet
The tradition of today’s Anthropos Pavilion goes back to the First Czechoslovak Republic. Thanks to the efforts of the researcher Karel Absolon, an extraordinary number of finds from the earliest periods of human history were gathered at the Brno Exhibition Grounds in 1928, in a special pavilion called “Člověk a jeho rod” (“Man and His Kind”) during the Exhibition of Contemporary Culture.
After the Second World War, the tradition was taken up by the anthropologist Jan Jelínek, later director of the Moravian Museum. The building of today’s pavilion was completed in 1962 to designs by the architect Evžen Šteflíček. In 2003 it was closed for a general reconstruction, and in 2006 it reopened to the public in a modernised and considerably expanded form.
The permanent exhibition is devoted to the earliest history of settlement in Moravia and across Europe. It consists of three sections prepared by leading experts: Moravia of Hunters and Gatherers, The Earliest Art of Europe, and Palaeolithic Technologies. The exhibition draws on archaeology, anthropology, genetics and other disciplines, and is complemented by original archaeological finds, including skeletons and tools. The centrepiece is a life-size mammoth.
The pavilion’s foyer has a café and a museum shop. The pavilion is part of the Moravian Museum and, alongside the permanent exhibition, hosts long-term and short-term exhibitions, for example “Když Brnem táhli mamuti” at the Galerie Zdeňka Buriana, which is also accessible to deaf visitors and includes haptic exhibits.
