Om museet

The studio stands in the courtyard of a house in Prague's Újezd district. It is a garden photographic studio from the late 19th century, which was moved from Královské Vinohrady in 1901. In 1990 it was declared a cultural monument, because it is the last surviving example of this type of building in Prague and a unique technical monument in the whole country.

Josef Sudek (1896–1976) began using the studio in June 1927. He lived and worked there with his sister Božena until 1959; then he moved to a flat in a house on Úvoz, but he continued to use the studio's laboratory until the end of his life. From the studio and the little garden in front of its window he created several extensive cycles, for example Okno mého ateliéru (The Window of My Studio) and Zahrádka mého ateliéru (The Garden of My Studio), which became world-famous.

After a fire in 1985 and the subsequent intervention of the fire brigade, the building was so badly damaged that a faithful replica had to be built. The investor for the construction and subsequent operation was the investment group PPF; the replica was created around 2000 in cooperation with the Prague 1 district, the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague and other partners.

Today the studio is an exhibition hall dedicated exclusively to fine art photography. The programme focuses mainly on the work of Czech artists of the middle and younger generations in the context of contemporary art; in the summer season at least one exhibition linked to Sudek or to his contemporaries and pupils regularly appears.
