Om museet
The museum in Polička was ceremoniously opened on 28 October 1934 in the building of a former barracks and later boys’ school, where the Muzejní spolek Palacký (Palacký Museum Society) finally obtained permanent premises for its collections. Soon a first small exhibition on the composer Bohuslav Martinů, a native of Polička, appeared there. The basis of the Martinů collection was formed in 1957, when the composer’s siblings donated autographs and family memorabilia to the museum.
The Martinů Memorial opened in 1973. During a fundamental reconstruction of the building in 2009, in the year of the 50th anniversary of the composer’s death, the Centrum Bohuslava Martinů (Bohuslav Martinů Centre) was established, following on from the memorial. It functions as a professional and social centre, manages an extensive collection of manuscripts, correspondence, photographs and family memorabilia, and organises exhibitions, publications and the family festival Zažít Martinů (Experience Martinů).
Visitors are guided through the exhibition Barevný svět Bohuslava Martinů (The Colourful World of Bohuslav Martinů), which follows the composer’s journey from Polička through Paris and New York to Italy and Switzerland, and through the Třída Bohuslava Martinů (Bohuslav Martinů Classroom), a reconstruction of a school classroom from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The building also houses exhibitions on the history of the town and on glassmaking in the Horácko region. Guided tours of the Gallery in the Baroque Town Hall, the Medieval Walls and the Birthplace room of Bohuslav Martinů in the tower of St James’s Church also start from the museum’s cash desk.
