Om museet
The Jeroným tin mine near the abandoned village of Čistá is documented from 1548. In 1551 King Ferdinand I granted Čistá mining rights and the privileges of a royal town. Despite rapid mining development, the mines were unprofitable at the beginning of the 17th century and were kept running mainly so that Čistá would not lose its status as a mining town.
It is estimated that the mine yielded around 500 to 700 tonnes of tin over its history. It was not as rich as other works in the area, but it has survived in its original form. In the central part there are impressive chambers from the 16th century. Many walls and ceilings are black with soot from the fires used to heat the rock, and the walls bear grooves left by the iron tools and picks of the miners of the time.
The mine operated intermittently until the end of the First World War, and exploratory work took place in 1940–1943 and 1964–1966. Today the mine is managed by the Sokolov Museum (Muzeum Sokolov) and is open in two routes. Extensive reconstruction is under way.
