Om museet
The Gothic castle of Kámen arose around the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries and takes its name from the rocky hill on which it stands. The first reliable mention dates from 1316. In 1327 King John of Luxembourg granted it as a fief to Bušek Tluksa. Later a number of owners held the castle, among them Jindřich of Ciglheim; Přibík Tluksa, who held it as a Hussite stronghold between Tábor and Pelhřimov; and, in 1437, Purkart Kamarét of Žirovnice. In 1450 George of Poděbrady met Henry of Rosenberg here.
In the 16th century the Malovec family united the estates. After 1640 Jan Kryštof Malovec rebuilt the castle: he added the south wing and a tower (1673) and set up a Baroque chapel with the family crypt. In the 18th and 19th centuries the castle often changed owners and lost importance; the last private owner, Antonín Fleissig, lost it after 1948. In 1953 it became a state cultural monument.
After the dilapidated building was restored, the castle opened on 22 June 1974 as a museum of single-track motor vehicles. From 2003 it was one of the independent contributory organisations of the Vysočina Region, and since 2011 it has been a branch of the Muzeum Vysočiny Pelhřimov. Today it offers a historical exhibition, a collection of historic motorcycles and the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows, and it hosts exhibitions, cultural events and weddings.
