Om museet
Křivoklát Castle was built in the 12th century, and Přemysl Otakar II developed it into an extensive royal seat in the middle of deep forests. Charles IV stayed there as a child and later; Wenceslas IV rebuilt the castle substantially, and Vladislaus Jagiellon extended it and completed it in its present form.
The castle was severely damaged several times by fires. During the Hussite Wars the Bohemian coronation regalia were kept there, and later it served as a feared prison, which reduced its importance. In the 19th century the Fürstenbergs rescued the monument; they had it restored and held it until 1929, when the last owner, Max Egon II, sold the castle to the Czechoslovak Republic.
Today Křivoklát is a national cultural monument administered by the National Heritage Institute. Visitors can see the Gothic palaces, the chapel, the library with about 52,000 volumes, the picture gallery, the Fürstenberg museum, the prison with its torture chamber, the towers and the walls. Tours always take place with a guide, on three routes of different lengths.
