Om museet

The Městské muzeum Žamberk is a municipal contributory organisation that looks after collections documenting the history of Žamberk and its surroundings. The permanent exhibition is housed in the former Kateřina hospital building on Československé armády Street. Visitors learn about the town’s history, its native sons and notable personalities, and the development of folk and artistic crafts in the Žamberk region.

The highlight of the exhibition is the neo-Gothic pharmacy from the 1890s, which the Vienna firm of Carl Franke made for the pharmacist Eduard Erxleben of Lanškroun. Period pharmacy equipment complements it, and since 2010 it has also included replicas of the original porcelain vessels bearing the Erxleben family crest. Other attractions include the mechanical Jedlička nativity scene and a puppet theatre.

In June 2024 an exhibition on the history of bookbinding in Žamberk was added. Its centrepiece is a replica of the Codex Gigas, the so-called Devil’s Bible, made by the local artist bookbinder Jiří Fogl; the original is on long-term loan to the museum. The museum also looks after the Prokop Diviš House, the birthplace of the inventor of the lightning conductor, and the Tyrš Lookout Tower. It organises exhibitions, talks and lectures and offers educational programmes for schools.
