Om museet

The beginnings of the Třebenice museum go back to 1872, when the physician and patriot Václav Pařík presented a collection of historic objects within the society Beseda. This date is often given as the year of foundation. After the expulsion of the German inhabitants in 1945–1946, the collection was reorganised and made accessible in the building of the former German school, and in 1951 Václav Kosina took professional care of it.

In 1960 the local history museum was transformed into the Muzeum českého granátu (Bohemian Garnet Museum) and moved into the former Protestant church in Loucká Street, where it remains today. The town of Třebenice is the founder, and the museum focuses on documenting, protecting, restoring and exhibiting regional heritage, historic objects and works of art. It stands on a quiet edge of the town centre, with a view of the ruins of Košťálov Castle.

The exhibition is designed in a period style and presents the mining and processing of Bohemian garnet, a gemstone with which the local region associates its history, as well as an extensive account of the castles of the České středohoří hills. It also covers the history of the town and its surroundings, its multinational past and notable personalities. Since 1991 a replica of the jewellery of Ulrika von Levetzow has been on display. Visitors can try searching for garnets in garnet sand, and buy jewellery with Bohemian garnet in the sales exhibition.
