Om museet

Horní Bříza is linked to the discovery of a large kaolin deposit within its cadastral area by the entrepreneur and mining expert Johann Fitz. On this basis he gradually built a modern company producing a wide range of building ceramics. In 1899 the joint-stock company Živnobanka bought Fitz’s company and made it the foundation of an extensive ceramics industry group. Horní Bříza thus became the capital of Czech ceramics for a hundred years.

The museum covers the period from 1882 to 2000 and all directions of ceramic production. It is housed in a building from 1884, which was originally a warehouse, rebuilt in 1930 as workers’ baths, and became a municipal museum in 1998. The museum’s founder, Božena Royová, moved the entire exhibition here and expanded it with the history of the municipality.

The wall section describes the history and documents it with many photographs; display cases contain exhibits for the individual periods. On view are fireclay and dinas components for furnace linings, a stoneware chimney from the early 20th century and stoneware sewer pipes. The largest part of the exhibition consists of wall tiles (obkladačky), including a sample of cladding from the television building on Kavčí hory from 1971, and a portable tiled stove. The museum also includes an archaeological and kaolin exhibition and an exhibition hall that doubles as a lecture room.
