Om museet
The Comenius Museum in Přerov was created by gradually merging several local museums and collections. The oldest of them, devoted to Jan Amos Comenius, was founded in 1888 on the initiative of the head of the local burgher school, and it is one of the first Czech museums in Moravia. In 1902 a town museum opened; later an archaeological and an entomological collection were added, which together with others became the basis of today’s holdings. The two main museums merged in 1950, and the institution has borne its current name since 1993.
The museum is seated in the Přerov château on Horní náměstí. The originally Gothic castle was owned by the Pernštejn family from the end of the 15th century; at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, Karel the Elder of Žerotín rebuilt it into a Renaissance château, and in the 19th century the Magnis family modified its interiors. After the First World War the town took over the château, had it reconstructed in 1927–1931, and adapted it for museum exhibitions and storerooms.
The long-term exhibitions fill most of the halls and cover about 1,200 square metres. Visitors can see the archaeology of the Přerov region, an exhibition on Jan Blahoslav and Comenius, an entomological and mineralogical collection, the folk traditions of Haná and Záhoří, a series of reconstructed school classrooms, and an exhibition of a bell foundry in the tower. The museum is established by the Olomouc Region; it also manages Helfštýn Castle and the Ornis ornithological station.

The château stands on an elevated site, reached by a steep path across a paved bridge; only the courtyard is nearly step-free, and it has a wheelchair-accessible toilet. A wheelchair user practically cannot reach the exhibitions without help, as the château has no lift, ramp or stair-lift. For blind visitors, a guide, a tactile model of the château and a tactile map of the town centre with Braille text are available by arrangement; guide dogs are admitted. Exhibition texts are in Czech, English and German. Before a visit, we recommend contacting the ticket office.
