Om museet
The horse-drawn railway from České Budějovice to Linz was built in 1825–1832 and in 1836 was extended to Gmunden. It is regarded as the oldest railway on the European mainland. The last horse-drawn train ran on 15 December 1872 from Urfahr near Linz to Lest.
Guard houses stood along the line, placed there from 1828 onwards. On the Czech section there were 53 of them; 22 survive today, some only as ruins, and most have been rebuilt. Guard house No. 1 was built in 1828 for the watchman of the goods station. In 1977 it was moved about ten metres further south and restored. It is a national cultural monument.
Today it houses a branch of the Jihočeské muzeum. The permanent exhibition is devoted to the guard houses and to the railway guards, who were among the lowest-ranking employees of the railway company.
