Om museet

The idea of a museum devoted to puppetry was first put forward by Petr Bogatyrev as early as 1929, at the founding congress of the international puppetry organisation UNIMA in Prague. Chrudim became associated with puppetry after 1951, when the national showcase of amateur puppet theatre, Loutkářská Chrudim, began there. The museum opened to the public on 2 July 1972 and is the oldest specialised puppetry museum in the country.

It is housed in the Mydlář House, one of the most important Renaissance monuments of eastern Bohemia, which was rebuilt in 1573–1577 at the instigation of Matěj Mydlář. The last private owner handed the house over to the town in 1954. The museum later acquired neighbouring houses: further buildings for offices and exhibition halls in the 1980s and 1990s, and in 2012 house no. 62, which serves as a centre for research, documentation and publishing. In 2011–2012 the Mydlář House was reconstructed, during which a medieval well was discovered, and in 2017 the restored terraces on the south side were opened.

The permanent exhibition Magický svět loutek (The Magic World of Puppets), opened in June 2020, presents Czech puppetry as well as puppets from other cultures. The museum is a contributory organisation of the Ministry of Culture, and in 2025 the Hravá hmatová expozice (Playful Tactile Exhibition) for visually impaired visitors was added.
