Om museet

The handmade paper mill in Velké Losiny was founded at the end of the 16th century on the estate of the Moravian Žerotín family, on the site of a former grain mill on a water channel. The oldest surviving watermark with the Žerotín lion dates from 1596. For several centuries mainly writing and drafting papers and cardboard were made here, and in 1729 a hollander beater was acquired, probably the first device of this kind in Moravia.

By the end of the 18th century the site had acquired its present late Baroque and Classicist form. When machine production of paper became established in the 19th century and handmade manufactories were disappearing, the Losiny paper mill survived thanks to the Schmidt family, who bought it in 1855. Handmade paper continued to be made from cotton and linen and found use in art, in the printing of bibliophile books and in restoration.

After 1949 the paper mill became part of a national enterprise, and production was saved, partly thanks to the support of visual artists. In the 1970s and 1980s the site was reconstructed, exhibitions on the history of paper production, i.e. the Muzeum papíru (Paper Museum), were created here, and the building was opened to the public. Since 2006 the independent company Ruční papírna Velké Losiny a.s. has been based on the site.

In 2001 the complex was declared a national cultural monument. Today it is one of the oldest handmade paper mills still operating in Europe, and visitors can follow traditional paper production from the preparation of the pulp to the finished sheet.

Entrépriser & rabatter

The prices stated apply to the first tour route (museum and handmade paper production). Holders of NPÚ, AMG and ICOMOS cards enter free of charge. School groups can book a tour that includes making their own sheet of handmade paper (children CZK 200, students CZK 260, adults CZK 290; from 10 people). Tickets can be booked online.

Children under 6 enter free of charge, and children under 15 may enter the building only accompanied by adults. Prams may be used on the site. School groups can book a workshop with handmade paper (calligraphy, letterpress printing, making an envelope).

On the site there is the Losín restaurant (with coffee and desserts) and a representative handmade paper shop, open during visiting hours. On Saturdays and Sundays they have a lunch break from 12:00 to 12:30.

The Losín restaurant on the site (50 places, a private room for 10 people, a summer terrace for 40 people) hosts family celebrations, wedding banquets and corporate events.
