Om museet

The Muzeum turistiky (Museum of Tourism) grew out of an initiative of the Klub českých turistů (Czech Tourist Club, KČT), which after 1990 was looking for a place for a long-planned museum. In Bechyně it acquired the former synagogue, which it renovated and opened on 2 July 2006 as the first museum of tourism in the Czech Republic. In 2007 the club bought the neighbouring house, and in 2008 it opened a permanent exhibition there for the 120th anniversary of the founding of the KČT.

The main hall of the synagogue contains a relief map of the Czech Republic with the lookout towers marked according to the material they are built from; a control panel and a large screen show the individual lookout towers and historical photographs of structures that no longer exist. The exhibition also presents tourist sites of interest, castles rescued through the voluntary work of KČT members, the history of tourist waymarking, the monthly magazine Turista published since 1889, prominent personalities and a collection of tourist badges. It includes the Síň slávy české turistiky (Hall of Fame of Czech Tourism). In the women's gallery of the synagogue there is an exhibition on the Jewish community in Bechyně.

On the first floor of the neighbouring house is an exhibition on the founding of the KČT in 1888, its first trip abroad and its success at the Jubilee Exhibition in Prague in 1891, on the founding of the Czechoslovak Tourist Club in 1918, and on the development of hiking and skiing tourism. The former synagogue building is a protected cultural monument.
