Om museet
The beginnings of museum activity in Vyškov go back to the 1890s, when an ethnographic department and later an Ethnographic Society were founded. The municipal museum opened in 1923 in the building of the burgher schools; in 1931 it moved into the former temple on the square, and since 1954 it has been housed in Vyškov Château. Since 1 January 2003 it has been a contributory organisation of the South Moravian Region.
The château was built by rebuilding a Gothic castle of the Olomouc bishops. Its present form was given to it in the 17th century by Bishop Karel II of Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn, to a design by Giovanni Pietro Tencalla; the château grounds include a garden with a loggia. In May 1917 the château burned during a fire in the town; it was later bought by the Moravian Land Committee. The museum exhibitions were ceremonially opened in it on 9 May 1954.
The collection holds more than 130,000 inventory numbers. The museum also manages the chapel and almshouse of St Anne, a central depository in Vyškov-Dědice, and the branch Muzeum Bučovice in the château in Bučovice. In Vyškov five permanent exhibitions can be visited; the newest, Pravěk a středověk Vyškovska (Prehistory and Middle Ages of the Vyškov Region), opened on 1 August 2025. Occasionally the historic cellar can also be visited.
