Om museet
The National Technical Museum was founded at its constituent meeting on 5 July 1908 on the initiative of the technical intelligentsia, especially professors of the Czech Technical University. It first opened its exhibitions to the public on 28 September 1910 in the Schwarzenberský palác at Hradčany. After the founding of Czechoslovakia it was named the Czechoslovak Technical Museum and, thanks to its collections, donations and state support, could begin construction of a new building in Letná.
The winning design in the architectural competition was by Milan Babuška. Construction began in 1938 and was completed in 1941, already under the Protectorate; the building was immediately taken over by the occupying administration for the Ministry of Posts. The museum first opened its exhibitions there after the war, in 1948, but part of the building continued to be used by other institutions until 1990. In 1951 the museum was nationalised and received its present name, the National Technical Museum.
After 1990 the museum obtained the entire building in Letná; from 2003 it underwent reconstruction, and today it offers 16 permanent exhibitions on seven floors, covering many fields of technical and industrial history. The functionalist building is a cultural monument. The museum also has branches in Plasy and Chomutov and manages the Postal Museum and the Letenský kolotoč.
