Om museet
PETROF Museum is an exhibition devoted to the famous Hradec Králové brand of pianos and grand pianos. It shows visitors more than 160 years of development, the company’s key milestones, and how a piano is made, from design to production. It also tells the story of the founder, Antonín Petrof.
The exhibition was created in cooperation with the company PETROF and the Hradecko Destination Company, with support from the statutory city of Hradec Králové. It forms part of the celebrations marking 800 years since the town was first mentioned in writing, in 2025. It opened to visitors on 19 November 2025 in the Infocentre building on Eliščino nábřeží. It followed on from the exhibition “PETROF 160: Klavír jako technické dílo”, which the National Technical Museum in Prague hosted from April 2024 to July 2025.
The collection includes authentic instruments, historical posters and photographs, awards and other artefacts. The oldest exhibit is a piano from 1865; the most modern is, for example, the futuristic Magic Egg pianino. Also on display are a pianola from 1929 and a pianino without its casing, which reveals the keyboard mechanism.
The exhibition extends over two floors, the ground floor and the basement. Visitors can follow it with an audio guide on their own smartphone, in which the stories are narrated, in the voice of actor Jan Bílek, by the company’s founder. A special feature is an interactive element that turns music played on the piano into an abstract image.
