Om museet
The Klatovy museum considered the idea of an exhibition of folk architecture already in the early days of its founding, during preparations for the Czechoslovak Ethnographic Exhibition in Prague in 1895. The plan came to life in the first decades of the 20th century, between the wars and in the 1970s and 1980s, but there were no forces or money for it. In 1990 the then District Museum in Klatovy acquired a Baroque manorial granary in Chanovice, a cultural monument, which it repaired with the help of secondary school pupils and adapted into a depository. The surroundings of the granary serve as a base for work-and-learning stays of young people, who help build the exhibition with free labour.
Through a free transfer the museum obtained about 1.5 hectares of land on the edge of the village with a view of an area of around 9 hectares. On the original sites, 13 monuments of folk building were dismantled, and some of them already stand again on the site: a log shed with a small barn from Měčín, log granaries from Petrovice, Přetín and Svrčovec, a barn from the mill in Nezdice, a residential cottage from Čachrov, a copy of a fruit drying house and a woodcutters' seasonal cabin, a niche chapel with a Baroque alms box, and a boundary cross. The exhibition is conceived as a rescue project for endangered buildings of south-west Bohemia.
In future the museum plans an entrance farmstead with facilities for visitors, and the opening of the first farmstead with a residential house, a cowshed, a barn, a shed and a granary. After completion of the Czech-Bavarian project, it has also opened a smaller exhibition, Tradiční lidová kultura regionů Klatovy–Cham (Traditional Folk Culture of the Klatovy–Cham Regions).
