Om museet

The open-air museum was founded at the initiative of ethnologists and conservationists as a rescue museum for valuable rural buildings of the central Vltava region that could not be preserved on their original sites. The then District Museum in Příbram, today the Hornické muzeum Příbram (Mining Museum Příbram), bought a plot of three hectares below Vysoký Chlumec castle from the Lobkowicz family in 1998. Construction of the Muzeum vesnických staveb středního Povltaví (Museum of Village Buildings of the Central Vltava Region), as a branch of the Příbram museum, began in 1999.

The first relocated building was house no. 4 from Obděnice, which was opened to visitors in 2002, after being moved in 2000. Two log granaries from Počepice followed, then a water sawmill from Dolní Sloupnice, a house from Arnoštovice and other buildings. The museum’s collecting area is mainly the former Příbram district, especially the Sedlčany region.

Today the open-air museum preserves buildings from the mid-17th to the early 20th century. Residential, farm, technical and small sacred buildings stand in a natural setting in a stream valley, and the interior exhibitions show how people lived and farmed in the countryside.
