Om museet
The castle was built around the middle of the 13th century on a basalt rock above the River Smědá. It was meant to protect the trade routes and the northern border of the kingdom. From 1278 it belonged to the Bibrštejn family, who built one of the most massive fortresses in northern Bohemia from it, with an extensive castle palace.
From 1558 to 1620 the estate was held by the Redern family. They added a Renaissance chateau with a chapel to the old castle, so that the military fortress became a representative noble seat. In 1622 Albrecht of Wallenstein bought Frýdlant and, during the Thirty Years’ War, turned the whole Frýdlant region into an economic base for his army. After his murder in 1634 the estate passed to the Gallas family.
From 1759 the estate belonged to the Clam-Gallas family, who opened part of the castle to the public as early as 1801. This created one of the oldest castle museums in Central Europe. The last major building work of the 19th century was the rebuilding of the steward’s wing. After 1945 the property passed to the state, and today it is administered by the National Heritage Institute. Because the family kept the seat in good repair and did not rebuild it according to fashion, the castle and chateau have remained exceptionally authentic. Visitors walk through fully furnished interiors, the armoury and the castle tower.

The building has no step-free entrance, and the tour leads up a large number of stairs; moving around the chateau park is also demanding because of the uneven terrain. In July and August there is a mini-cinema in the courtyard showing a documentary of about 35 minutes on the interiors, accessible to wheelchair users and pushchairs (ramp). For blind visitors there is a tactile model of the site in the visitor centre; for deaf visitors a printed text of the commentary on the basic route is available free of charge at the ticket office. Guide and assistance dogs are allowed with the prior consent of the site management; on some routes they are restricted for operational reasons.
