Om museet

The extensive site between Krhanice and Lešany served the German army and SS units during the Second World War. After the war it operated first as a prisoner-of-war camp and then as an internment camp, and in 1948–1950 as a forced-labour camp. From November 1950 it belonged to the Czechoslovak and later the Czech army, which stationed artillery and other units there.

The barracks buildings were acquired in February 1995 by the Historický ústav Armády České republiky, today the Vojenský historický ústav Praha (Military History Institute Prague). The former garages and halls were first converted into storage depots, and as early as 1996 the first exhibition was created in the form of an installed depot. From 1999 large dioramas were built in the individual halls; the first hall was opened to the public on 27 May 2000.

Today the museum presents hundreds of historical tanks, guns, motorcycles, armoured, utility and passenger vehicles, rocket technology, signals and engineering equipment and logistics material from 1890 to the present. The collections are displayed in ten halls, under canopies and in the open air. The exhibition in the halls follows the history of the Czechoslovak army chronologically, from 1918 to the early 1960s, and is supplemented by Cold War equipment from the arsenals of both blocs. The largest annual event is the Tank Day at the end of the summer holidays, when historical equipment is demonstrated in motion.
