Om museet
The first written mention of the Opočno stronghold dates from Cosmas's Chronicle of 1068. The stone Gothic castle was probably built by the Drslavic family around 1330, and in 1425 the Orphans (Sirotci) set it on fire. From 1495 the estate belonged to the knightly Trčka z Lípy family, who made the castle the centre of a large estate. In 1560–1567 Vilém Trčka z Lípy had today's Renaissance chateau with two-storey arcades built. Next to it he had the Church of the Holy Trinity built as a family burial place.
After the Trčka family died out, the Colloredo family bought the estate from the emperor in 1635. Around 1690 a fire destroyed the upper floor and roof of the chateau. The subsequent Baroque reconstruction of the south wing, led by the architect G. B. Alliprandi, unified the main building into its present form. The Colloredo-Mansfeld family, who held Opočno until the 20th century, gathered extensive collections of paintings, weapons and books at the chateau. After 1989 the family claimed the chateau's restitution.
The interiors today show visitors the life of a noble family at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The last rearrangement of the collections took place at the turn of 2021 and 2022. Since the 2022 season, the second floor, which previously served as a depository, has also been open to visitors. The chateau is managed by the National Heritage Institute (NPÚ), and the complex includes the chateau park with a summer pavilion (letohrádek) and a palm house.

The chateau is not accessible for wheelchair users. Of the rooms open to the public, only the introductory African Hall is accessible without stairs; the interiors of the first and second floors can only be reached by stairs. Both courtyards are step-free (at the entrance under the arcades there is a low step of 10 cm). The ticket office is not accessible for wheelchair users because of narrow doors. A toilet for people with reduced mobility is in the visitor facilities in the first courtyard. Wheelchair users can visit part of the park with the exteriors of the summer pavilion and the palm house; the park can be entered step-free from Zámecká street. One reserved parking space is on Trčkovo náměstí (Trčka Square), about 100 m from the entrance. Holders of a ZTP or ZTP/P card may enter the pedestrian zone in front of the entrance. It is free of charge, has a large capacity and no time limit, and is suitable for buses too. Smaller parking areas are on Kupka Square, about 250 m from the chateau (from Monday to Friday, part of the spaces is limited to two hours). Coach passengers can alight on Kupka Square and park by the Coop shop in Dobrušská street.
