Om museet
The château in Telč began as a Gothic fortress, which in the mid-16th century was rebuilt into a Renaissance residence by Zachariáš of Hradec. After a journey to Genoa in 1551 he was influenced by the Italian Renaissance, and in 1553 he married Kateřina of Valdštejn, whose dowry came largely from silver mines and helped finance the rebuilding; the coats of arms of both spouses can be found throughout the château. The construction took place in two phases under Italian masters; the vaulting was made by the stonemason Leopold Esterreicher of Slavonice, and the final design was probably determined by the architect Baldassare Maggi of Arogno. The last major building was the funerary chapel of All Saints, completed in 1580.
At the beginning of the 17th century the château was inherited by the Slavata family, later by the Liechtensteins and the Podstatský family, who carried out only minor alterations and focused mainly on the park. The château was never sold; it passed only by inheritance within the family.
Visitors today see mainly the preserved Renaissance interiors, including the Golden Hall (Zlatý sál), which runs through the whole north palace, the Renaissance garden with low arcaded corridors, and the park with a 19th-century Empire-style greenhouse. The tours also cover the living rooms of the last owners from the Podstatský z Lichtenštejna family, the château museum in the former inn premises, the Gothic underground and the installed depository Poklady za oponou.
