Om museet

The château at Veltrusy was built at the beginning of the 18th century on an island in the Vltava for the Chotek family. Václav Antonín Chotek began construction in 1706 to a design by the architect Giovanni Battista Alliprandi, and the shell was completed in 1709. The stucco and sculptural decoration was made by Giovanni Domenico Spazio and Franz Anton Kuen. In 1754 the first sample fair in the world was held in the château and park in the presence of Empress Maria Theresa.

Around the château a large landscape park developed, with Classicist and Empire pavilions such as the Laudon Pavilion, the Doric Pavilion, the Maria Theresa Pavilion and the pseudo-Gothic Red Mill. The park is today about the size of three Stromovka parks in Prague. The château belonged to the Choteks until 1945, when it was confiscated under the Beneš Decrees; the last owners, Karel Maria Chotek and Livie Mailáthová, died in 1970 in Bavaria.

The flood of 2002 inundated most of the park and damaged many buildings and trees. Reconstruction of the main building, the park and the Mlýnský potok stream followed, and in July 2021 the main château building was reopened to the public. Veltrusy is a national cultural monument managed by the National Heritage Institute.
